The French FT17 was one of the most revolutionary tank designs in History. It was the first tank to ever feature its armament in a 360' degree rotating turret while its layout; crew compartment at the front, engine compartment at the rear and armament in turret became and still is the accepted standard layout for tanks to this day.

In excess of 3000 FT17 tanks were produced, most of which in the year 1918 and saw their battlefield debut on the 31st May of the same year during the Second Battle of Marne.

The tanks were massively successful and following the end of the First World War saw service with the armed forces of many other countries including (but not limited to) Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Spain as well as other countries as far afield as Brazil, Japan, China and Afghanistan.

The French Army still had over 500 FT17 tanks in active service in 1940 at the time of the German invasion during the opening years of the Second World War. A large number of these tanks were captured by the Germans and despite their battlefield obsolescence still found service in roles such as Airfield Defence and Occupational patrols.

Xe tăng F17 có tính cách mạng bậc nhất về thiết kế trong lịch sử. Đó là xe tăng đầu tiên được trang bị tháp pháo xoay 360 độ, khoang cho kíp lái ở phía trước, khoang động cơ nằm ở phía sau và tháp pháo hiện vẫn được xem như chuẩn mực cho thiết kế xe tăng hiện nay.

Đã có hơn 3000 xe tawgn F17 được sản xuất, đa số vào năm 1918 với trận ra quân vào 31/05 năm này trong suốt cuộc chiến sông Marne lần 2.

Những chiếc tăng này đã đạt những thành tựu to lớn và sau khi kết thúc thế chiến thứ nhất, nó đã được rất nhiều quân đội các quốc gia đưa vào phục vụ như Bỉ, Ba Lan, Tiệp Khắc và Tây Ban Nha, kể cả các quốc gia xa xôi hơn như Brazil, Nhật, Trung Quốc và Afghanistan.

Quân đội Pháp vẫn giữa hơn 500 chiếc F17 vào 1940, tại thời điểm Đức tấn công trong thời kỳ đầu thế chiến thứ hai. Một số lượng lớn xe tăng được người Đức thu giữ và dù không mang ra trong các trận chiến, nó vẫn được dùng cho các nhiệm vụ như bảo vệ sân bay hay tuần tiễu ở các vùng chiếm đóng.
